ASTM A516 Grade 65 Plate

A Grade 65 plate enquiry is settled by the standard scope, the grade, the delivery or heat-treatment condition, the dimensions, the service conditions, the testing and the documents — not by the grade name on its own.

Send the governing designation with its edition, Grade 65, the thickness, width and length, the required delivery condition, any supplementary requirement or impact-testing basis, the quantity, the destination and the inspection documents the project requires, so the enquiry can be checked against the intended service before anything is quoted.

Where the project has already fixed a grade and a condition, put both on the enquiry. Where it has not, say so — an open requirement is more useful to a technical review than a guessed one.

Selection

Checking Grade 65 against the actual requirement

Work from the service requirement inward. Grade 65 is one point in a graded range, and its place in that range only means something once the project's design basis and plate thickness are known.

Confirm the grade belongs to this service at all

Grade 65 sits in the middle of the carbon-steel pressure-vessel range this specification covers. Its position in that range — not any figure on this page — is what you check against the design code's allowable stress at the design temperature and the plate thickness.

Separate the grade from the delivery condition

The grade designation and the heat-treatment or delivery condition are two distinct inputs, and more than one condition is permitted. State which condition the order is placed on rather than letting the supplier infer it from the grade alone.

Fix dimensions and tolerance basis before comparing

Thickness, width, length, quantity and the tolerance basis attach to the grade and change what can be compared. Two quotations naming Grade 65 against a different thickness range or tolerance basis are not yet the same offer.

The neighbouring grades in the same specification are comparison paths, not automatic substitutes. A different grade, a higher alloy standard or a heavier section is only comparable once the strength basis, the heat-treatment state and the test requirement have been checked against the service. Compare A516 Grade 70 plate and A516 Grade 60 plate on the same basis before treating either as a swap.

Where the grade sits

Grade 65 occupies the middle of the carbon-steel range this specification covers, between the lower-strength and higher-strength grades. Which grade is acceptable is fixed by the design code's allowable stress at the design temperature and the plate thickness — not by the grade name alone.

That is why the enquiry asks for the design basis. Without it, the grade cannot be confirmed as either suitable or excessive for the duty.

Specification

What to state so acceptance is unambiguous

Each input below is a separate ordering decision. Leaving one open is the usual reason two quotations turn out not to be the same plate.

InputWhat it fixes
Designation and editionThe specification the project names, with the edition where the design or the purchaser requires one. This is the document the order will be certified against.
GradeGrade 65 named explicitly. Its place in the range fixes the property basis applied at that thickness — it does not follow from a family description, and it is not a synonym for another grade.
Product formPlate, as distinct from any other product form a similarly worded description might cover. The form is part of the acceptance basis, not an afterthought.
Plate thickness, width and lengthFinished dimensions as required, in one coherent unit system, with the dimensional basis the project uses. Note any critical fit so tolerance can be checked before quotation.
Delivery / heat-treatment conditionWhich permitted condition the plate is ordered in. Stated on its own line of the order, separately from any impact requirement.
Toughness / impact testingWhether impact testing applies, at what test temperature and to which acceptance energy, and whether it comes from the specification or from a project addition. A distinct decision from the delivery condition.
Supplementary requirementsAny supplementary requirement, additional test or project addendum named in the enquiry. Where the order calls for one, it has to be stated explicitly rather than assumed from the base specification.
Inspection and documentsThe certificate type and any additional testing, inspection or third-party witness the purchaser specifies. Agreed at enquiry stage, not assumed from the grade.
Quantity and destinationOrdered quantity in plates and mass, the delivery point or port, delivery term and Incoterm with its named place, and the consignee. These drive packing, shipment documents and the commercial basis.

The delivery or heat-treatment condition and the impact-testing requirement are recorded separately. Neither one implies the other, and acceptance is checked against each on its own line of the order.

Specification Check

Check the plate selection against the order

Enter the details the order will actually be placed on. The check flags what is still missing before an enquiry is prepared, so an apparently comparable option is not treated as equivalent.

Leave anything genuinely undecided blank rather than filling it with an assumption — the gap is what the technical review needs to see.

Verification

Confirming the plate matches the order

Verification follows the purchase specification. Ask for the records the project requires, and match what arrives to what was ordered.

ASTM A516 Grade 65 Plate procurement scene showing fabrication planningPreparation for fabrication and dispatch
  • Match the material identification to the ordered designation and edition, Grade 65, heat number, dimensions and delivery condition before the plate is cut — once it is processed, the identification is much harder to reconstruct.
  • Keep the delivery condition and the impact-testing requirement on separate lines of the order and of the certificate review, so acceptance is checked against the right figure on the right document.
  • Match the chemical and mechanical evidence to the declared basis rather than to the grade name, and raise any certificate type or supplementary test at enquiry stage rather than after delivery.
  • Confirm any class approval, third-party inspection or project approval against the actual supply — they follow the order and the works, and are not implied by the grade designation on this page.

Certificates, heat-treatment records, class approvals and supplementary tests are confirmed for the actual supply. Nothing on this page should be read as confirming them for a particular order.

Applications

Where ASTM A516 Grade 65 plate is specified

Application fit depends on what the plate has to do in service and how it will be fabricated. The same grade designation can carry different toughness, weldability and documentation controls from one duty to the next.

Storage tanks and containment

Where the stored product, the design pressure and the minimum design metal temperature decide whether this grade and condition are acceptable, and the design code sets the allowable.

Keep the technical specification unchanged while the destination-specific import path, consignee requirements and shipment documents are checked for the actual order.

Customs classification, conformity requirements and duty treatment follow from the actual goods and destination, and are confirmed for the specific shipment rather than quoted generally.

Technical Note

The purchasing sequence that avoids a costly re-quote

Identify the governing service requirement first, then lock the material specification and edition, the grade, the delivery condition, the dimensions, the testing and the documents.

Doing it in that order keeps offers comparable. Working the other way round — collecting quotes against a familiar grade name and trying to reconcile the specifications afterwards — is how two offers that both say “A516 Grade 65” turn out to differ in edition, delivery condition, impact basis or acceptance basis.

Nothing on this page is a material property, a stock position or a certificate. It sets out what an enquiry for this grade has to contain so that what comes back can be checked against the project requirement rather than against a name.

Where a requirement is genuinely still open, leave it open on the enquiry rather than filling it with an assumption. A supplier who can see the gap can tell you what has to be resolved; a supplier given a guess has nothing to check against.

Selection context for this page draws on ASTM International — A516/A516M (information date 2026-10-06). The specification sets the scope for carbon-steel pressure-vessel plate, and the purchaser confirms the active edition, the grade, the thickness, the heat treatment and any supplementary requirement. This source is used for selection context, not for supplier-specific claims.

  1. 01

    Define the service requirement

State the design pressure, the design temperature and the minimum design metal temperature. This decides whether the grade is in scope before anything else is settled.

  2. 02

    Lock designation, edition and grade

Name the specification with its edition and Grade 65 explicitly, with any supplementary requirement the project calls for.

  3. 03

    Fix the delivery condition

State which permitted heat-treatment or delivery condition the order is placed on — a separate input from any impact requirement.

  4. 04

    Confirm dimensions and testing

Thickness, width, length, tolerance basis and unit system, plus whether impact testing applies, at what temperature and to which acceptance energy.

  5. 05

    Add quantity, destination and documents

Quantity in plates and mass, delivery point, Incoterm and consignee, plus the certificate type and inspection records the project requires.

  6. 06

    Review processing and commercial terms

Cutting, edge preparation and marking scope, then the commercial terms, before the order is confirmed.

FAQ

Grade 65 plate sourcing, answered directly

Each answer depends on the project specification and the actual order conditions. Where a requirement is order-specific, it is confirmed against the enquiry rather than assumed here.

Which standard, grade and edition should be stated on the enquiry?

State the specification the project actually names, with its edition where the design or the purchaser requires one, Grade 65 explicitly, and the product form. The grade designation alone is not the specification: the edition, the grade and any supplementary requirement or project addendum all have to be named so the quotation and the mill test certificate can be matched against the plate actually shipped.

When does heat treatment or impact testing matter?

These are two separate decisions and should be stated separately. The delivery or heat-treatment condition describes which permitted condition the plate is ordered and supplied in; the impact requirement sets what the material must demonstrate, typically at a stated test temperature and to a stated acceptance energy. A project can call for one without the other. Do not assume that a named delivery condition implies an impact result, or that an impact requirement removes the need to state the condition.

Which dimensions and tolerances govern acceptance?

Give the required thickness, width and length, keep one coherent unit system, and state the tolerance basis the project uses rather than leaving the supplier to choose one. Plate tolerances are tied to the governing standard and can vary with thickness and product class. Where a fabrication has a critical fit, say so on the enquiry so the tolerance can be checked before quotation rather than discovered after delivery.

What inspection documents are required?

Provide, or ask for, the document set the project requires — typically the material test certificate carrying the chemical and mechanical evidence for the declared basis, the heat-treatment or delivery-condition record, heat and lot traceability, and any additional testing, inspection or third-party witness the purchaser specifies. Where a certificate type or a supplementary test is needed, state it at enquiry stage so it can be scheduled and costed. Nothing on this page should be read as confirming certification for a particular supply.

Can a related grade be substituted?

Only where the governing specification permits it and the substitution is verified against the actual service. A neighbouring grade in the same range, a different standard or a heavier section may look comparable on a summary but differ in strength basis, heat-treatment state, impact behaviour, weldability or acceptance basis. Related pages on this site are comparison paths, not evidence that two grades are interchangeable. Where the project requires a specific designation, that designation governs.

What destination details are needed for a firm commercial offer?

State the delivery point or port, the required delivery term and Incoterm with its named place, the consignee and any document set the destination requires. Customs classification, conformity requirements and duty treatment follow from the actual goods and the actual destination, so they are confirmed for the specific shipment rather than quoted generally. Availability, price and lead time are likewise confirmed against the live enquiry.

Request a Quote

Provide the standard and edition, Grade 65, the thickness, width and length, the required delivery condition, any supplementary requirement or impact-testing basis, the quantity, the destination, the documents and any cutting, testing or inspection scope. Price is always on request.

If a requirement is still undecided, state it explicitly. The technical review can then identify what has to be resolved before a commercial offer is finalised.
