Mild steel plate is a low-carbon, weldable plate: the carbon content is kept low so the plate can be formed and welded without the hardening and heat-treatment discipline of higher-carbon or alloy steels. The exact chemistry, however, is set by the declared grade and edition — it is never assumed from the word "mild".
State the carbon limit and residual element requirement in the RFQ and request the mill certificate chemistry to confirm the plate conforms to the declared grade.

A low-carbon, low-sulphur plate welds and forms predictably and avoids the quench-sensitive behaviour of higher-carbon grades. Service limits
Corrosion & temperature limits for mild-steel plate
A low-carbon structural plate is a general-purpose, unpainted-as-supplied product: it has no inherent corrosion protection and a defined temperature envelope. Where the service is corrosive or temperature-sensitive, the grade, protection and testing decision must be verified — never assumed.
Mild steel plate corrodes in atmospheric and moist service unless protected. Surface condition, coating, protection system and any galvanising or other treatment are purchase decisions — confirm the protection basis against the destination and service environment before quotation.
Buyer implication: state the coating / protection requirement in the RFQ so the plate and its surface treatment match the service environment.
Standard low-carbon structural plate has a defined working temperature and loss-of-strength behaviour above it.
