The approved schedule names SS400 and an applicable product form.
Before you enquire
State the JIS edition and exact profile.
Structural steel · Grade
Order SS400 with the governing JIS G 3101 edition, product form and complete section designation. Where drawings use EN or ASTM shapes or grades, resolve material and geometry differences separately before accepting an SS400 offer.
SS400 belongs to the JIS general-structural material route. It is not an automatic synonym for A36, S235JR or every steel described with a similar strength number.
Standards check
Three states decide how a brief is handled. Each one names the decision, why it matters on this grade and the field to settle before an enquiry is worth sending.

Before you enquire
Compare material and dimensions independently.
Before you enquire
Provide the design acceptance schedule before grade approval.
| Decision | Why it matters here | Before you enquire |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | The approved schedule names SS400 and an applicable product form. | State the JIS edition and exact profile. |
| Verify first | The profile or drawing comes from another standards system. | Compare material and dimensions independently. |
| Different approval needed | Service requires unconfirmed weld, impact or other special properties. | Provide the design acceptance schedule before grade approval. |

Use an explicit requirement-by-requirement comparison; similar applications do not establish equivalence.
Check quality, property conditions and geometry instead of accepting an informal equivalence table.
Enquiry builder
Record which standard governs the material and which governs the shape. The summary flags the approval task but does not convert grades or nominate an equivalent.
Prepared summary
Complete the specification to prepare a review summary.
Prepared locally in your browser — no personal data is collected here and nothing is sent. The destination RFQ form owns contact collection, and a submission is complete only when that form returns a genuine acknowledgement.
Review JIS G 3101 material scope separately from the dimensional standard; no EN or ASTM equivalence is approved by this summary.
Material vs geometry
Use the contract edition and offered product evidence for acceptance. A nominal tensile-class label cannot replace the complete mechanical and fabrication requirements.
| Specification decision | Applicability and limit | Evidence to request | RFQ action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material standard | SS400 must be identified within its applicable JIS material specification. | Governing edition and heat-specific chemical/mechanical report. | State SS400, product form and required certificate. |
| Dimensional series | A Japanese profile and a similarly named foreign profile can differ. | Applicable section standard and producer drawing. | Give depth, width, thicknesses, length and tolerances. |
| Fabrication and service | Welding or special-service requirements must be assessed explicitly. | Designer’s requirements and qualified fabrication procedure. | List any toughness, welding or supplementary testing conditions. |
| Equivalent proposal | A comparison name does not demonstrate contractual compliance. | Side-by-side requirements and written approval. | Mark every substitute as an exception. |
Documents and acceptance
Check that material reports, markings and section drawings refer to the same items. If the order mixes JIS material with another profile system, make that combination explicit for approval.
| Control | What to examine | When and limits | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material standard | Governing edition and heat-specific chemical/mechanical report. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | State SS400, product form and required certificate. |
| Dimensional series | Applicable section standard and producer drawing. | Give depth, width, thicknesses, length and tolerances. | |
| Fabrication and service | Designer’s requirements and qualified fabrication procedure. | List any toughness, welding or supplementary testing conditions. | |
| Heat and item identity | Mill test certificate linked to heat markings and packing list. | Before release and again on receipt; a sample certificate is not evidence for the shipped heat. | Request traceability through cutting, bundling and delivery. |
Applications
The application routes define the surrounding design and fabrication questions; they do not certify SS400 for every member.
Clarify welding, connection and member-size requirements where drawings use different standards.
Match the item list to the approved section series and erection-lot schedule.
Obtain written approval for any cross-standard grade or geometry proposal before purchase.
GCC markets
Share the material submittal requirements with the receiving project team before agreeing commercial terms. Country flags identify the destination; quotation must confirm the supply route, origin and availability for this order.
Every market card below — Keep SS400 and the profile standard explicit on the destination documents.
Identify the emirate, fabricator or site address and unloading restrictions; distinguish a domestic handover from an import leg.
Name the consignee, importer and final site; ask who confirms product classification and border documentation before dispatch.
State the nominated receiving point and project document approver; align certificate review with the required arrival window.
Specify the actual port, border point or inland site requested; separate the entry leg from onward transport and unloading.
Identify the contractor or fabrication yard receiving the sections; agree import-document responsibility and the named delivery place.
Confirm whether the order is for local consumption or onward shipment; name the consignee and agree who handles each transport leg.
Commercial
Require the offer to identify the mill, material specification, dimensional series and every deviation. Do not compare an SS400 JIS profile with a different section solely by nominal depth or price per tonne.
Ask for the offered mill and origin, section schedule, quantity basis, processing scope, packing, commercial validity and exclusions. State the Incoterm with its named place and edition, who unloads, and the requested delivery window.
Price, availability, production allocation, transport feasibility and dates require written confirmation.
Coordinate an export enquiry — retain material-standard and section-designation references on export packing and item records.

Profile names
These technical routes help check shape and mass descriptions; confirm the applicable JIS producer table for the actual offer.
Compare the full geometry when a beam drawing and quotation use different naming systems.
Avoid treating UPN, PFC and Japanese channel descriptions as automatic dimensional matches.
Review the material-standard scope and contractual edition separately from SS400 item selection.
Expert insight
Nippon Steel’s shape manufacturing-standard information distinguishes material specifications and steel designations. The procurement inference is to name the material basis explicitly rather than relying on a shape nickname.
Buyer implication: Request the applicable JIS grade and dimensional standard together in the quotation.
Method: Review a producer’s material-standard listing and separate grade identity from profile geometry. Applicability: SS400 section identification and order preparation. Limit: A producer’s listing does not prove an offered lot, a cross-standard equivalent or Noor Deira availability.
Comparison evidence
Each control names what to examine and the RFQ field it locks, so competing offers can be read against the same acceptance requirement.
Governing edition and heat-specific chemical/mechanical report.
State SS400, product form and required certificate. This makes competing offers easier to compare against the same acceptance requirement.
Applicable section standard and producer drawing.
Give depth, width, thicknesses, length and tolerances. This makes competing offers easier to compare against the same acceptance requirement.
Designer’s requirements and qualified fabrication procedure.
List any toughness, welding or supplementary testing conditions. This makes competing offers easier to compare against the same acceptance requirement.
Reconciliation
Each stage names its owner, the required input, the evidence it produces and the risk that stays open until it closes.
| Stage and owner | Required input | Evidence or output | Risk and next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering release — Buyer’s design authority | Approve SS400, the material edition and the complete dimensional series. | Approved specification and drawing revision | Unapproved substitution can change the design basis. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Offer review — Buyer and quotation team | Compare the offered grade and geometry against the drawing without assumed equivalence. | Written technical exceptions and commercial scope | An unlisted exception can survive into the purchase order. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Material release — Mill, inspector and buyer as agreed | Check heat identity, material results and the approved section dimensions. | Accepted documents linked to the order items | Missing heat identity can make an otherwise correct section unacceptable. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Receipt and reconciliation — Receiving team | Reconcile markings, quantities and any mixed-standard item references. | Delivery record, item count and discrepancy record | Record any mismatch before the material is incorporated into work. Close the item before proceeding. |
FAQ
Short answers to the questions that come up when a drawing and a quotation sit in different standards systems.
No. Review the full material, product and project requirements and obtain approval for the proposed substitution.
No. Name the section series, complete designation, dimensions and applicable tolerance basis separately.
Request a documented offer that explicitly identifies the material and dimensional combination for project approval.
No. Specify the required welding and service acceptance basis and confirm the procedure’s suitability.
Resolve the contractual edition with the project authority. A newer publication does not silently amend an existing contract.
A full comparison of applicable requirements, offered product evidence and written design approval for the actual items.
Next step
Send the material and dimensional standards, complete profile schedule and fabrication requirements. Keep proposed equivalents separate from the base enquiry.
Prepare and copy the summary above, then open the structural-steel RFQ and paste it into Product Requirement. Add your name, company and reply email on that form. Supporting drawings can be shared through the destination’s verified contact process.
This page prepares your enquiry locally. Opening the RFQ does not submit it. A submission is complete only when the receiving form returns a genuine acknowledgement.
