Quality, Testing & Documentation

MTC-backed, traceable and documented

Every hollow section we quote is supported by a mill test certificate and the test documents your specification requires. We reconcile the MTC against your order before it ships.

Mill test certificates (MTC) matched to the lot.

Mill test certificates

Chemical and mechanical results verified against the governing standard.

Mechanical testing

Tensile, yield and elongation per section grade.

Dimensional check

Section size, wall and thickness measured against tolerance.

Source traceability

Heat number, lot and coil identification retained end-to-end.

Procurement Insight

Why hollow beat solid at the same weight

A common procurement error is to compare sections on mass per metre alone. For a given weight, a hollow section spreads material away from the neutral axis, so it carries more bending load than an equivalent solid bar. That is why an SHS or RHS can replace a heavier solid member in a column or beam — the stiffness benefit comes from geometry, not extra metal.

SectionOuter dimsWallUnit weight
SHS100 × 100 mm5.0 mm≈ 14.9 kg/m
RHS150 × 100 mm6.0 mm≈ 22.9 kg/m
CHS114.3 mm OD5.0 mm≈ 13.5 kg/m

Unit weight for a rectangular hollow section ≈ 0.00785 × (2 × t × (w + h) − 4 × t²), with dimensions in millimetres (for CHS, weight ≈ 0.02466 × t × (D − t)). Because section material sits at the extreme fibres, hollow profiles deliver a high strength-to-weight ratio — which is why they are the default for columns and efficient trusses. Engineering reference — mass-per-metre per standard HSS geometry; compiled 30 August 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hollow sections, answered for buyers

Direct answers to the questions procurement teams ask most about hollow sections.

What hollow sections can Noor Deira Steel supply?

Square (SHS), rectangular (RHS), circular (CHS), cold-formed and oval hollow sections in galvanized, carbon and mild steel. Availability is confirmed against your specification, not from a standing catalogue.

What is the difference between SHS, RHS and CHS?

SHS has equal sides, RHS has unequal sides, and CHS is circular. SHS offers high torsional stiffness; RHS suits beams and asymmetric loads; CHS provides uniform radial stiffness for columns and architectural work.

What is the difference between cold-formed and hot-finished hollow sections?

Cold-formed sections are rolled and welded from strip or coil to tight tolerance (EN 10219, ASTM A500); hot-finished sections are formed at elevated temperature (EN 10210). The choice depends on tolerance needs and design code.

Which grade do I specify for structural hollow sections?

ASTM A500 Gr. B/C and ASTM A1085 are common in North-American design; EN 10219 S355J2H and EN 10210 are common in European and Gulf design; JIS G3466 STKR serves Japanese-standard projects. Confirm the governing code and grade together.

What does A500 Grade B vs Grade C mean?

Grade C has a higher specified minimum yield strength than Grade B. ASTM A500 cold-formed sections; the grade choice is governed by the structural design and its yield requirement.

What information do I need to request a hollow section quotation?

Section type, material, grade, standard, width, height, wall thickness, length, quantity, destination and Incoterm. The Specification Builder collects these fields and hands them to our commercial department.

Does Noor Deira Steel supply hollow sections across the GCC?

Yes — Noor Deira Steel coordinates hollow section supply to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, with Incoterms, bundling and destination documents agreed per order. Lead time is confirmed at quotation stage.
