Why gauge — not diameter — governs sheet behaviour
A common procurement error is to specify steel sheet by appearance or finish alone. For a given width and length, what changes the forming and structural behaviour is the thickness, expressed as gauge. Because gauge numbers decrease as the sheet thickens, a 10-gauge sheet is more than five times thicker than a 24-gauge sheet — and because unit weight scales linearly with thickness, the heavier sheet carries proportionally more mass per square metre.
