What is the difference between a grade and a specification?

A grade names the chemistry and tensile class — A36, S355, 304. A specification is the grade plus dimension, tolerance and test documents. The grade is the material; the specification is the complete requirement.

Which standard governs my specification?

ASTM, EN, API or a project spec, whichever your drawing names. If none is named, the dimension and application map the requirement to the appropriate standard, and the equivalence is checked.

Can one specification cover multiple product families?
