How this chart derives its values

Every value is presented under a stated dimensional standard and unit system, with source, method, applicability and limits made explicit.

Governing dimensional standard. Every outside diameter is presented as a nominal value under a stated standard and edition — ASME B36.10 for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe, or the project-specified standard. The chart names its source; it never invents a value.

Unit system coherence. Inch-pound and metric are kept coherent: each nominal OD is shown with both its inch and millimetre value, converted consistently so no false precision is created.

Nominal vs overoted. Nominal size is not the same as the measured outside diameter. The chart returns the standard nominal OD; the purchased length, wall and any measured tolerance are confirmed against the standard and the mill certificate.

Assumptions and limits. The resolver verifies dimensions only. It does not calculate pressure rating, does not derive wall from schedule, and does not imply material, grade or service suitability from a size.

From input to verified dimensional basis

Example 1 — NPS 10, schedule stated

Input: NPS 10, schedule 40, inch-pound, ASME B36.10.

Method: NPS fixes a nominal OD of 10.750 in (273.1 mm) under the stated standard.

Interpretation: This is a dimensional basis. Schedule 40 is echoed as a separate field — it does not set pressure or wall by itself.

Decision impact: The buyer can take NPS 10 + schedule into the RFQ for quantity and wall, and verify material/grade and pressure separately. 10 inch steel pipe turns the dimension into a size decision.

Example 2 — size outside the subset

Input: NPS 5, inch-pound, ASME B36.10.

Method: 5 is not in this page’s reference subset, so no OD is read off a partial chart.

Verification step: The value must be confirmed against the printed standard/edition. The RFQ carries NPS 5 as an overoted, schedule and pending-verification field rather than a guessed number.

The nominal-to-OD reference

Nominal outside diameters referenced to ASME B36.10. Every value is a dimensional result under the stated standard and edition, confirmed at quotation — it never establishes material, pressure or service suitability by itself.

Standards and tolerance context

The outside diameter, wall and schedule are controlled by the governing standard and edition. Tolerance limits are set by that standard — confirm the permitted tolerance band on the actual size against the printed document, not from this chart alone.

Schedule is not pressure

Schedule refers to a nominal wall series in the standard. It does not by itself set pressure capability. Two pipes of the same NPS and different schedule can carry very different design pressures; pressure is judged by the design code and wall calculation, never by schedule name.

Route and grade are separate

Dimensions alone do not identify material, grade or manufacturing route. Seamless and welded pipes can share the same nominal OD yet differ in material, grade, test obligation and purchase specification. Keep grade, grade/PSL type, and route explicit in the RFQ.

Verify at quotation

Every dimensional value that matters — OD, wall, length, tolerance — is confirmed at order against the standard/edition and the mill certificate. This page builds the basis; the RFQ carries it for verification.

Verify scope before committing to a grade or route

The dimensional basis does not pick the grade. Confirm the product-standard scope and ordering fields — API 5L and ASTM A106 — before committing. Matching dimensions alone never establish material, grade, pressure rating or service suitability.

Verification & misuse controls

Common dimensional errors and when review is required

Input error — mixing nominal and measured

Do not treat a rounded nominal size as the measured OD. Nominal NPS is a label; the OD is a standard value and the wall a tolerance band. Use the standard’s OD, not an assumed round number.

Invalid comparison — schedule across standards

A schedule in one dimensional standard is not automatically equal to the same schedule in another. Compare wall and OD only within the same standard and edition.

Uncertainty — unverified dimension

If the size is not in an authoritative reference and edition, treat the dimension as unverified. Request the mill certificate and a dimensional/tolerance check rather than reading a value off a partial chart.

Evidence requirement — the certificate set

The wall, OD, tolerance and any test values must be traceable to the standard/edition and the shipped heat. Request the mill test certificate and dimensional report at quotation.

Engineering review boundary

Where a dimension must also guarantee pressure capability, material or grade for a design, the decision moves past a dimensions chart to the design engineer and governing code. This page does not cross that line.

A dimensional basis, clearly scoped

A steel pipe dimension is judged against a fixed dimensional standard. ASME B36.10 — Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe — standardizes dimensions for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe for high- or low-temperature and pressure service. Why can the same NPS have different wall thicknesses or weights?

How should metric and inch-pound values be handled in an RFQ?

Keep the unit system coherent and state it in the RFQ. The page carries each nominal OD in both inches and millimetres, converted consistently. Never mix a millimetre wall with an inch OD without stating both; a metric (DN) request must still be tied to a stated NPS or a standard-specific nominal so there is no false precision.
