How a plate price is formed

Plate pricing is specification- and logistics-dependent. Understand the steps so you compare quotations on a like-for-like basis and can catch a misleading figure.

1 — Fix the specification

The quoted plate starts from the exact standard/edition, grade, dimensions, thickness tolerance and delivery condition. Any of these unknown leaves the figure unbounded.

2 — Add processing & inspection

Cutting, edge, surface and test scope (mill test, third-party, dimensionals) change scope, saw-loss and lead-time. State them before comparing totals.

3 — Normalize the logistics basis

Destination, Incoterm, packing and required date change the landed figure. A per-ton number without these is not a comparable steel-plate offer.

Worked examples

Plate mass first — price follows specification

Weight is the one plate input you can compute from standard dimensions and density. These worked examples produce plate mass and part-count — never a selling price. A per-ton price is only a quote against a full basis.

A36 workhorse plate

ASTM A36 carbon plate, 10 mm × 2500 × 6000 mm.

10 × 2.5 × 6.0 m × 7850 kg/m³ ≈ 1.18 t per plate.

30 plates ≈ 35.3 t theoretical mass.

Density 7850 kg/m³ is standard for carbon plate; add the tolerance/weight-basis choice at quote.

Pressure-vessel plate

ASTM A516 Gr 70, 6.35 mm × 2000 × 4000 mm.

6.35 mm × 2.0 × 4.0 m × 7850 kg/m³ ≈ 0.40 t per plate.

50 plates ≈ 19.9 t theoretical mass.

A516 testing scope (tensile, bend, optional UT) must be confirmed before a runner is made.

Higher-strength structural

S355JR / ASTM A572 Gr 50, 12 mm × 2500 × 6000 mm.

12 × 2.5 × 6.0 m × 7850 kg/m³ ≈ 1.41 t per plate.

40 plates ≈ 56.5 t theoretical mass.

Higher-strength grades still resolve to the same mass basis — only the grade/standard changes the quote.
